11 Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated While Traveling
It can be hard to stay hydrated while tending to all your adventurous activities on your trip. I can assume drinking water isn’t the first thing on your mind while riding an elephant in South Africa or bungee jumping in Hawaii. In this post you will find practical, easy ways to stay hydrated while traveling. Take a look!
11 Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated While Traveling
1. Set reminders on your phone
It can be very easy to forget to drink water if you’re out and about all day on your trip. A great tip is to set a reminder on your phone. There are apps specifically designed to track your water usage on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. A few of the top apps include Waterllama, Water Reminder, and Drink Water Reminder. Even just having the app on your phone can remind you to take a sip of water when you unlock your phone.
OR you could just use your alarm app and set daily reminders! Up to you! Try a few different things and see what works best for you.
2. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go
Out of sight out of mind, right? If you don’t have a water bottle with you, it can be easy to forget about staying hydrated. Try and get into the habit of carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go, it can be hard at first lugging around an extra thing in your hand, but you will quickly get used to it and love the energy constant water intake will give you.
Pro Tip: Remember to fill your water bottle to the brim before you get on your flight!
3. Try liquid IV
Liquid IV is an easy way to stay hydrated while traveling. It’s a powder that you mix in with a glass of water or you can put it in your water bottle. It has electrolytes, so if you are in a hot climate or did a vigorous workout while on vacation, Liquid IV is a great hydrating replenishment.
Tip: Mix with water after a night of drinking or in the morning when you wake up. It will help replenish all the electrolytes lost while drinking. Why do we lose electrolytes during/after drinking? Alcohol is a diuretic which induces the need to urinate more. This excretes the electrolytes potassium, phosphorous, magnesium and sodium from the body. It is very important to replenish these after a night of drinking!
4. Have 1 glass of water with every drink of alcohol
Piggybacking off the previous tip, try matching your drinks of alcohol to cups of water you drink. Alcohol is a natural dehydrating substance. I know it’s yummy, but drinking water alongside each drink of alcohol will save you the dehydration and headache in the morning.
5. Choose foods high in water content
Fruits and vegetables are your best friend. Foods higher in water content can help you stay hydrated throughout the day because, well, they have water in them. Here are some examples:
- Strawberries
- Melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew
- Oranges
- Blueberries
- Celery
- Lettuce
- Cucumber
6. Here me out here – check your urine color
This is one of the easiest ways to determine if you need to hydrate more while on your trip. If your urine color is a dark yellow, that means your dehydrated. If it’s clear (i.e. your urine is more diluted with water), that means you’re well hydrated.
Whenever you go to the bathroom just do a quick check and you’ll know immediately if you need to bump up the water drinking or not.
7. Flavor your water
A very simple way to drink water for the people who don’t like plain water or want a change, add some flavoring!
Infuse with fruits or try water enhancers. Some of my favorites:
- Mio
- True Lemon
- Hint Fruit Infused Water
- Coconut Water
8. Listen to your body
The #1 indicator that reminds you to drink your water – thirst! We naturally feel thirsty when our body knows we’re not drinking enough fluid. Take this as a huge sign to sip on your water or grab a high water content food item.
9. Have a glass of water with every meal
If you’re out and about all day, try to make a habit of having a glass of water with every meal. If you’re on a big adventure and are not able to get sips of water in throughout the day, try pouring a big glass of water for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Bonus: also gulp a glass of water when you wake up and before you go to bed to get that extra dose of hydration.
This one can easily become a habit if you stick to it!
10. Make drinking water fun
Decorate your water bottle
Buy a HydroJug
Try sparkling water
Buy cute ice cubes
Have some tea!
11. Hold yourself accountable with your traveling partner(s)
It makes it easier when you have friends to hold you to your water drinking goal. Maybe they have the same goal as you and you can both remind each other throughout your trip OR you can make it a game and see who does better with their water drinking every day! Nothing like a little healthy competition!
And that’s a wrap!
I hope you are all well and hydrated on your next adventure😊
